Osama Bin Laden used his wife as a human shield in a bid to dodge fatal shot

Robert O’Neill said he was solely responsible for the death of Bin Laden in his memoir, “The Operator: Firing the Shots that Killed Bin Laden”.

The gruesome novel opens with Mr O’Neill writing how he and five other Seals entered Bin Laden’s compound and travelled to the second flight of stairs.

Once they spotted the terrorist’s two-year-old son Khalid, holding an AK-47 as he sat next to the corpse of Bin Laden’s wife, they knew Bin Laden would be above them, according to the novel.

The Seal’s were able to lure Khalid from where he was hiding behind a banister by calling to him in Arabic, saying: “Khalid, come here.”

He shouted in response “What?” as he emerged from his hiding spot, but was immediately shot in the face.

Immediately after, the officers reportedly ran up the stairs and O’Neill said he thought to himself, “I’m f****** done with waiting for it to happen”, so he gave his point man signal to charge and shoot at a curtain.

The other officers tackled two women to the ground who were inside and laid eyes on the United States’ most wanted enemy, who attempted to use his youngest wife as a human shield.

Writing in the New York Daily News, Mr O’Neill said: “In less than a second, I aimed above the woman’s right-shoulder and pulled the trigger twice. Bin Laden’s head split open, and he dropped.”

O’Neill’s book comes five years after a memoir written by his fellow Navy Seal Mark Bissonnette, titled ‘No Easy Day,’ in which he recounts his own interpretation of the events.

Mr Bissonnette surrendered the $6.8million in revenue from the book due to the publishing of classified information, and violation of a non-disclosure agreement, according to the Mail.

O’Neill retired from the Navy Seals in 2012, following a difficult stint within the public eye.

He found himself viewed unfavourably by his fellow Seals, and rumours circulated that he was bragging about his role in bin Laden’s death, according to the Mail.
