Saudi Arabia: Over 27,000 divorce suits in 45 days

Divorce cases reached over 45 percent of total personal status cases heard in Saudi courts. A total of 27,602 cases for divorce were heard by the courts in the first 45 days of this year, a rate of 613 cases a day.

With over 7,200 divorces, Makkah saw the most number of cases, followed by Riyadh with over 6,200 cases, the Eastern Province with over 3,000 cases, Asir with over 2,300 cases, Madinah with over 1,900 divorce cases, and Qassim and Jizan with over 1,400 cases each.

Sheikh Abdulaziz Al-Shberma, a Supreme Court judge, said: “The attitude of the courts toward divorce suits and marriage annulment cases is not reform and reconciliation.”

“The reconciliation committee holds one meeting between the couple because of the large number of divorce cases and proper reconciliation may require more than one session,” he said.

Al-Shberma said the main reasons for the high incidence of divorce in the Kingdom included not investigating the suitor or the bride before marriage, weakness of religious faith, the use of drugs or alcohol, being involved in forbidden relationships, wives› lack of interest in family values and prioritizing personal interests over the family.
