Turkey builds new roads and outposts in Northern Iraq

Turkish armed forces has entered 17 kilometres inside Iraq-Kurdish territory and has started constructing permanent outposts, reported Artı Gerçek. Turkey extended its military operations in Syria against Kurdish forces to Iraq on March 10 by starting airstrikes against the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) targets and local sources in Iraq claim that Turkey continues to deploy troops and sends military equipment since then.

Turkey launched a military incursion, Operation Olive Branch, into Afrin in northwest Syria on Jan. 20 to fight the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and its armed wing the People’s Protection Units (YPG), which Turkey sees as analogous to PKK, an internationally-designated terrorist group that has run an insurgency against Turkey for more than thirty years. Turkey and Free Syrian Army forces seized the control of Afrin on March 18 and since the beginning of the operation in Afrin, Turkish government has expressed its intentions to advance the operations to other territories in Syria and Iraq that are under the control of PKK affiliated forces.
According to Artı Gerçek, an official from Sidekan district of Erbil told Rudaw TV that Turkish armed forces have more than a thousand troops in north Iraq and they are taking steps to stay there permanently.  Local sources also told that Turkish forces are building new roads and 3 outposts in the region.
