Abu Dhabi Police have arrested four hackers who allegedly stole more than AED1 million by installing skimmer devices on ATMs across the UAE.
Anti-cyber crime experts from Abu Dhabi Criminal Investigation Department (CID) made the arrests after the hackers, described as Asian, used malware to steal data from consumers’ credit cards.
According to state news agency WAM, they transferred the victims’ accounts to magnetic cards, such as hotel master keys and shopping loyalty cards that they later converted to credit cards to steal the funds.
Colonel Dr Rashid Mohammed Borshid, head of CID, told WAM that managed in less than 24 hours to arrest one of the hackers’ accomplices.
He said CID teams confiscated all the malware and equipment, including laptops, scanners and photocopiers used by the gang, and referred the hackers to the appropriate authorities for further action.
Borshid cautioned computer users to refrain from sharing personal data or photos on suspicious websites.
