Unique mosaics of one of the most beautiful stations of the world are being restored in Baku

Major repairs were started in “Nizami Ganjavi” metro station.

As reported to 1news.az by head of the press service of the Baku Metro Nasimi Pashayev, during the repair, rusted structures are being replaced and unique mosaics of the station are being restored.

“This is the first major repair work carried out in this station, opened in 1976. It is a deep level station and was built in difficult hydrological conditions. It is still exposed to aggressive impact of groundwater. This is what leads to corrosion of metal and concrete structures. Unfortunately, unique mosaics of the station are also at risk of damage.

Therefore, along with major repairs, restoration of mosaics and replacement of damaged elements is carried out. The main objective is to fully restore unique mosaics of one of the most beautiful stations of the world”, – Pashaev emphasized.

Let us recall that the author of the mosaics is Mikayil Huseyn oglu Abdullayev (19 December 1921, Baku – 21 August 2002, Baku) – an Azerbaijani painter and graphic artist, Honoured Art Worker of the Azerbaijan SSR, People’s Painter of the USSR, full member of the USSR Academy of Arts.

Restoration of mosaics is carried out by his student Zohrab Jabbarov, ceramist Elchin Jabbarov and marbler Nizami Valiyev.

“Nizami” station, named after the great Azerbaijani poet and philosopher Nizami Ganjavi, was built according to a project of the People’s Architect of the USSR academic M. Huseynov. The underground palace is decorated with a mosaic portrait of Nizami and murals based on motifs from his poems.
