The form of the humanitarian aid Georgia wants to send to Aleppo, Syria will be agreed during this week.

Georgia’s Foreign Minister Mikheil Janelidze said before the end of this week Georgia would know what exactly the country could do to help the people in the besieged western Asian city.

“There are very limited opportunities for [helping Aleppo] because products can’t directly be provided to the area. But there is a special fund created by the United Nations and other formats, which we are cooperating with and we will define the form of the humanitarian aid in this week,” Janelidze said as he spoke to journalists, summerising the year.

He also stressed that Georgia used all possible ways to voice strong support for Syria at the international arena, and named a couple of examples.

“We are fully represented at the international arena regarding the issues of Syria crisis. This is reflected in our statements at different US formats, resolutions and also by the fact that at the Istanbul Summit, Georgia’s President expressed our readiness to accept migrant students if international donors provide funding,” Janelidze said.

The Minister’s statement about Aleppo came after Prime Minister Giorgi Kvirikashvili said on December 17 the Georgian Government wanted to provide humanitarian aid – through the help of the UN office – for children in Syria.

The Prime Minister said he wanted “to somehow manage” this but the question was “how”.

The country’s Foreign Ministry said since then Georgia had been working together with UN representatives to find ways to help Aleppo.
