Population of Armenia declined by 10.1 thousand people

The permanent population of Armenia on October 1, 2016, according to current register based on the census of 2011, is 2 993.9 thousand people, as reported to “ARKA” agency by the National Statistical Service of the republic.

Population of Armenia as of October 1, 2016 decreased by 10.1 thousand people or 0.3% compared to the same period of 2015. At the same time, since the beginning of the year, the republic’s population has decreased by 4.7 thousand people, due to excess of a negative net migration rate – 14.1 thousand people over natural population increase – 9.4 thousand people.

According to the National Statistical Service, the size of the urban population of Armenia at the end of September compared to the same period in 2015 decreased by 6.3 thousand people to 1 904.6 thousand, and Yerevan’s population decreased by 1.9 thousand people. In rural areas, the population decreased by 3.8 thousand to 1 089.3 thousand people.

By January 1, 2016, the population of Armenia was less than 3 million people for the first time since the 70s.

According to the National Statistical Service, the number of children born in the country in January-September 2016 decreased by 2.3% compared to the same period in 2015, amounting to 29,914. While the number of deaths during the reporting period also decreased by 2.5% to 20,427.
