“Pope Francis regards and values Azerbaijan as a tolerant country. Azerbaijan and the Vatican enjoy good relations,” Ordinary of the Roman Catholic Church’s Apostolic Prefecture in Azerbaijan Vladimir Fekete told a press conference on the occasion of the Pope`s forthcoming visit to Baku.
He said that Azerbaijan’s role in the reconstruction works in the Vatican contributed to the improvement of these relations.
“The Pope`s visit to Azerbaijan in the year of multiculturalism proves that he considers and values Azerbaijan as a tolerant country. He will meet with the representatives of all religions here,” Fekete said.
Ordinary Fekete expressed his hope that the visit would give impetus to the development of bilateral relations between the two countries.
Pointing to the Armenia-Azerbaijan Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, Fekete said that the problem must be settled not by means of force, but through negotiations. “The Nagorno-Karabakh conflict is a very sensitive issue for Azerbaijan because it has continued for more than 20 years.”
Saying Pope Francis visits the region under the motto “We are all brothers,” the Ordinary noted that the Pope is totally opposed to a military solution to the conflict.
