Baku opens 42nd World Chess Olympiad

The 42th World Chess Olympiad will start today in the capital of Azerbaijan.

The competition will be attended by 142 women’s and 182 men’s teams.

The chess Olympiad in Baku will be held according to Swiss system of 11 rounds. The Olympiad will end on September 14. The main rivals of the Russian team will be the Chinese players, who won at the previous Olympiad in 2014 in Norway, the Azerbaijani national team, the team from the USA, Ukraine, France, Hungary, India, and others. This year Armenia has refused to participate in the competition.

The 87th Congress of the International Chess Federation (FIDE) will also be held within the framework of the tournament.
