Twelve people have been killed after militants attacked a police checkpoint north of the Iraqi city of Tikrit and detonated a car bomb, Iraqi officials said.
It is the first attack of its kind in the city, which lies 95 miles north of Baghdad, was retaken from so-called Islamic State in April 2015.
One of the militants was killed after shooting dead four police officers, according to police.
Two other militants detonated the car bomb seven kilometres away, killing eight people and wounding 23, sources said.
