The fight against Daesh “remains a priority for the international community”, UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric told reporters Wednesday regarding Turkey’s recent military operation in Jarabulus, Syria.
“The secretary general has strongly condemned [Daesh] attacks against Turkey,” Dujarric said. “At the same time, the United Nations urges all to respect international norms and principles,” he said, adding that civilians and civilian infrastructure must be protected “under all circumstances”.
Turkey on Wednesday launched a cross-border military operation in Jarabulus, 5 kilometers (3 miles) from Turkey’s border, with the aim of clearing the area of terrorist elements.
Turkish forces use artillery fire and airstrikes against Daesh positions.
The “Turkish border must be controlled by Turkey”, U.S. Vice President Joe Biden said while expressing support for the operation during a one-day visit to Ankara.
