The conference, organized by Armenia under the pretext of “the 25th anniversary of independence” of the separatist regime established in the occupied Azerbaijani territories was cancelled.
Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry spokesman Hikmat Hajiyev told Trend on Wednesday.
“Armenia under the pretext of “the 25th anniversary of independence” of the separatist regime established in the occupied territories of Azerbaijan, for purposes of provocation, together with the center for Political and Foreign Affairs had planned to organize a conference on September 2-3 in Yerevan. Former government leaders, members of parliament and civil society representatives were expected to participate at the event. It was also planned to organize a visit of the participants to the occupied territories. However, Director of the Center for Political and Foreign Affairs Fabian Baussart made a statement in which he noted that he was forced to cancel the initiative”, – Hajiyev said.
Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry on the eve issued a statement calling upon persons who were invited to the conference to respect the norms and principles of international law and to refrain from illegally visiting the occupied territories of Azerbaijan and attending this forum, which obviously pursues provocative goals.
Diplomatic missions of Azerbaijan abroad, particularly in France and the UK, conducted awareness-raising activities with persons who were invited to the conference and explained to them that such events are detrimental to the negotiation process on the conflict settlement.
Many of the invited participants, taking into account the sensitivity of the situation in the region, cancelled their participation, Hajiyev said.
