Yuriy Mavashev: The coup was obviously beneficial to the side that won as a result

There is a large number of versions, rumors and speculation formed around the failed coup in Turkey. A considerable number of them come from Russian experts.  With a request to comment on this issue, we turned to the orientalist-turkologist, expert of Caucasian Geopolitical Club Yuriy Mavashev.

Who benefits from such a scenario in Turkey? How are these events perceived in Russia?

Looking at recent developments in the Republic of Turkey, I believe that the coup was obviously beneficial to the side that won as a result. Now all we have to do is figure out who is the losing side. According to Turkish authorities, the coup was orchestrated from the United States, being the conspiracy of a well known Islamic scholar Fethullah Gülen.

However, it should be noted that in recent years it has become typical for the Turkish establishment to blame some “superior mind” for all problems and failures. A number of leading Turkish analysts are convinced that this includes the certain forces, which may refer to both the US or the UK, and to Zionism. But the Turkish expert of AL Monitor Taha Akyol emphasized that Turkey was introduced to the “superior mind” concept in 2014 by the leadership of the country.  “Now that we are adopting an “increasing friends” policy (refers to the policy of acting Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım “More friends, fewer enemies”), I wonder what the “superior mind’s” opinion on this is. Does anybody know?”, -ironically asked Taha Akyol.

Perhaps the answer to this question was the statement of the US Secretary of State John Kerry, according to which Ankara must present evidence if it has suspicions that Washington was involved in the conspiracy.

Obviously, we also should turn to “superior mind”, to finally figure out who won and who lost?

As for Russia, regardless of any “superior minds”, Russia is ready to mutually beneficial cooperation with all its neighbors. It is no coincidence that the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova announced that Moscow stands ready to work together with the legitimate leadership of the Republic of Turkey, and stressed that what is happening will not have a drastic impact on bilateral relations.
