Ain Dubai is the new name for Dubai-I

One of the most significant construction stages of the record-breaking observation wheel being built in Dubai has been completed. And with it a new name has been given to the mesmerising project near Jumeirah Beach Residence.

Formerly known as ‘Dubai-I’, the world’s largest and highest attraction of its kind will be called Ain Dubai(‘Ayn’ is the sixteenth letter of Arabic alphabet and translated as ‘eye’). It has been hailed as an ‘unprecedented in the engineering world, both in terms of process and scale’.

Located on Bluewaters Island, a brand new man-made archipelago to the south of Dubai, it will be the signature attraction among a host of new offerings, including other entertainment centres and hospitality offerings.

At the same time as announcing the new name, developers also revealed the construction, which has so far been delivered by two of the world’s largest cranes, now has the hub and spindle in place.

“Ferris wheels and observation wheels offer the gentle thrill of being conveyed up in the air and have fascinated people for several hundred years,” developers Meraas said in a press release. “Our iconic attraction heralds a new era in the world of entertainment and will introduce the unforgettable option of viewing Dubai from the skies.

“Once completed, Ain Dubai will emerge as an engineering masterpiece.”

Coming in at 40 metres long and 20 metres high, the 1,805-tonne installation is made of a steel similar to that used for nuclear plants, and sits on top of the 126 metre-high legs.

Approximately four weeks of welding will now be undertaken.

Creating access to Bluewaters Island has been an equally impressive feat, as those who have watched the development of numerous new bridges and ramps between Sheikh Zayed Road, Jumeirah Lakes Towers and JBR will testify.

In total, three multi-span bridges will cross the main road, each 11.4m wide and 500m long, while the main access road to the island itself will be 1.4km and 25m wide. It includes a system to connect Bluewaters Island to the Metro system.
