40 war college staff arrested in Istanbul over coup bid

Forty military personnel were arrested Monday at the War Colleges Command in Istanbul, a security source said, in the latest round of detentions following the July 15 coup attempt.

Counter-terrorism police rounded up the suspects, including commissioned officers, from the premises in the city’s Besiktas neighborhood and took them to the Security Department for questioning, the source said on condition of anonymity due to restrictions on speaking to the media.

The suspects’ home addresses were also searched and computers and documents seized, the source added.

Fifteen officers from the command, which oversees the war colleges of Turkey’s armed forces, who were arrested on July 18 have since been remanded in custody.

Around 13,000 suspects including military personnel, police, judiciary members and civil servants have been arrested in a nationwide probe into the failed coup, which saw 246 people killed and 2,100 injured.
