A Japanese couple has been convicted of having sex out of wedlock in a car parked at a beach in Dubai.
An off-duty policeman, who had gone to the beach with his relatives in Al Sufouh area, found the couple having sex in their car in March.
The off-duty policeman informed the Dubai Police’s operation room about the incident.
During interrogation on the spot, the 41-year-old Japanese man told police that he and his 28-year-old friend came to the beach after consuming alcohol at Madinat Jumeirah.
He told police that as they fell sick and felt pain in the stomach after consuming alcohol, and they removed their clothes to throw up the liquor.
After they were referred to the public prosecution, they were accused of having sex out of wedlock and consuming alcohol.
When the couple appeared before the Dubai Misdemeanours Court, they entered a guilty plea and asked the presiding judge for a lenient punishment.
The court convicted the duo of having consensual sex and handed them a one-month suspended imprisonment.
According to the primary judgement, the 41-year-old defendant was acquitted of having alcohol while the woman was fined Dh2,000.
The court also handed them a deportation order.
The off-duty policeman [who works at Abu Dhabi Police] told prosecutors that when he drove his car towards the beach, he found the couple in an awkwardly indecent position.
The Japanese man testified that he consumed liquor when had gone out with his friend for dinner.
“When we left the restaurant, we felt sick. Then we drove towards the beach, removed our clothes and tried to throw up to feel comfortable … we did not have sex. When I left my car and went to urinate, the witnesses saw us. Then police came and apprehended us,” he testified.
The woman defendant testified that she had to throw up because she was not used to drinking alcohol.
The defendants have already appealed their primary judgement and are scheduled to appear before the Appeal Court in September.
