A Chinese tourist who had been missing for four days in Dubai was found dead on a sand dune, Chinese media reported.

The Chinese embassy in Dubai confirmed his death on June 17, the news portal163.com reported.

The man, 59, who has not been named, was travelling with a tour group organised by online travel agent Ctrip, left Hangzhou in coastal Zhejiang province for a nine-day tour. He was last seen on June 16 in Dubai Mall, the largest shopping centre in Dubai, where the tour group had been by their guide.

The guide later called his relatives in China to report his disappearance the following day after his roommate reported that he had not returned to the hotel.

The report said police in Dubai had ruled out foul play after a preliminary investigation.

“He likes travelling and he has been to many countries. But he does not speak English, so he chose to travel with tour groups every time,” the man’s son-in-law, surnamed Shao, was quoted as saying in the report.

Police would not speculate on the cause of his death until an autopsy was carried out.

The man’s relatives said that they suspected he died of heat stroke as temperatures in the desert country can reach 50 degrees Celsius.
