A 30-year-old Syrian refugee in the Sankt Polten province has been detained on suspicions of having ties to a terrorist group, judicial sources said Thursday.
The unidentified suspect was taken into custody during a joint operation by special forces and counter-terrorism teams at his apartment in Sankt Polten, the city’s public prosecutor’s office said in a statement.
Officials did not provide additional information about the suspect, citing the ongoing investigation, but Austrian media said the suspect is linked to al-Qaeda and was trained in Syria.
The detention brings to 17, the number of terror suspects detained in last two months across Austria.
