Levon Ter-Petrosyan’s statement is a move that is absolutely not in the interests of Armenia and improves the negotiating position of President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev, said the head of the Armenian Institute for International and Security Affairs Stepan Safaryan in an interview with Radio Azatutyun, commenting on the statement of the first president of Armenia Levon Ter-Petrosyan, made last Saturday at the convention of The Armenian National Congress (ANC), that “there is no solution to the Karabakh conflict other than the phased one”.
“I dread to think why Armenia’s first president is doing that. Look, he even accuses the authorities, saying: “Your supporters don’t even properly talk about the compromises”, – noted the analyst.
When asked whether the statement of the ANC’s leader was intended for internal or external audience, Safaryan said, “This statement is addressed exclusively to external audiences. It seems that he sends the message to Russia that “here, look, Armenian authorities openly do not support your option of settlement, and I am the only one who does”. He wants to give the impression, bets that he is a politician inclined to satisfy Russian interests”.
Note that during his address, the first president of Armenia said that he considers Ilham Aliyev a “rationally thinking statesman capable of taking a proportionate step towards peace much needed for his own people, just like his late father, Heydar Aliyev, who at the time gave a reasonable reaction speech to my article “War or Peace?””.
“I can imagine all the fuss that will be made in political and information field of Armenia after this speech. We will once again witness a magnificent carnival of ignorance, shortsightedness, boasting. We will be tagged with many worn-out labels, and yet again be pilloried in support of another paradoxical syllogism characterizing the originality of the Armenian political thought”, – he said.
