State Dept. approves exercise support deal for UAE

The U.S. State Department approved a proposed $75 million foreign military sale to United Arab Emirates supporting their participation in military exercises, the Defense Security Cooperation Agency announced Monday.

If approved by Congress, the deal would support UAE participation in military exercises, aerial refueling, airlift and ferry support, training aids, devices and munitions, technical and logistics support services and other related support functions, the agency said in a statement.

The State Department said the sale would improve the country’s ability to use its fighter jets in a coalition setting, adding to its ability to partner in the ongoing campaign against the Islamic State and al-Qaida terror groups.

The sale’s implementation would not require the assignment of additional U.S. government or contractor personnel in the UAE, the agency said.
