E-commerce giant Amazon has sparked a controversy by selling traditional Muslim robes as skimpy party dress with a description “sexy Saudi burka Islamic costume”.
The picture put on display shows a woman wearing a black cropped tunic with a plunging neckline. The dress, having a price tag of USD 29.99, advertised on Amazon was removed after shoppers slammed the internet based shopping site as ‘Islamophobic’.
“Wow… this is extremely inappropriate and frankly quite racist. The burka is an important part of Muslim culture. This is extremely offensive,” a user commented.
Another user gave the costume one-star and said, “Halloween is all about having fun and enjoying ourselves-but it doesn’t have to be at the expense of cultures, histories, and entire traditions.”
After facing ire from its customer, Amazon decided to remove the product.
“All Marketplace sellers must follow our selling guidelines and those who don’t will be subject to action including potential removal of their account,” a spokesman for the online store was quoted as saying by The Sun.
“The product in question is no longer available,” he added.
However, the costume was available on the website until late night on October 6.
The product was finally removed on October 7.
This is not the first time when Amazon has sparked such a controversy.
