Syrian refugee saves Canadian wedding

A wedding photographer has written an emotional post explaining how a Syrian refugee, newly arrived in Ontario, Canada, went above and beyond to save a bride’s big day.

In a post on the Love What Matters Facebook page, Lindsay Coulter explained that the bridesmaids were helping bride Jo Du into her dress when the zip broke.

Basically, every bride’s nightmare scenario.

‘The girls were all surprisingly calm but weren’t having much luck fixing the zipper,’ Lindsay wrote.

They desperately needed a hero.

Enter Ibrahim Halil Dudu. He’d only arrived in Canada four days previously with his family, after escaping the horror and violence of war-torn Syria. He’d been taken in by David Hobson, who lived in the house next door to the one Jo was getting ready in.

Ibrahim happened to be a master tailor.

‘After a few minutes of further attempts there was a knock on the door and the neighbour along with the tailor & his son arrived to help, sewing kit in tow,’ Lindsay explained.

‘I went out to take some photos of the groomsmen and came back to find the tailor putting the finishing stitches on her dress.

‘The neighbour David told me they had just moved to Canada four days ago. They didn’t speak a word of English, and had been communicating by using Google Translate.’

Lindsay says she was humbled by ‘the incredible act of kindness’.

‘Every weekend I take photos of people on the happiest days of their lives, and today one man who has seen some of the worst things our world has to offer came to the rescue,’ she wrote.

‘I am so proud to live in Canada, a country who has opened our doors to refugees countless times. I’m in awe of the families who have welcomed these strangers in to their homes and lives, and I’m inspired by the resilience of the Syrian people. We are truly blessed.’

Lindsay’s post has been liked 68,000 times in two days. ‘It’s very overwhelming,’ she told the BBC of the response. ‘I think Canadians want to help when they see others in need.

‘We love Canada, but we know we just won the lottery on where we were born.’

Ibrahim, his wife and their three children escaped Aleppo three years ago, but then had to wait for asylum in Turkey. They’re among the 50 families being sponsored to live in Canada by businessman Jim Estill.
