Qatar and Russia sign military cooperation deal

Qatar and Russia on Tuesday signed a military cooperation agreement, the official Qatar News Agency reported.

The deal came during a meeting between Qatari Defense Minister Khalid bin Mohammad Al Attiyah and his Russian counterpart Sergey Shoigu, the agency said. The agreement was also reported by Russian news agency Tass.

“Ways of supporting and promoting military cooperation relations between Doha and Moscow were discussed during the meeting between the two ministers in Russia,” the Qatari agency said.

The two leaders met at a military forum in Kubinka, to the west of Moscow.

Russia and Qatar support opposing sides in the Syrian civil war. Qatar has signed military deals with a number of countries in recent years, including Turkey, and has long-standing military ties to the U.S.
