Turkey is supporting Azerbaijan in the settlement of the Armenia-Azerbaijan Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, said Turkey’s Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu on CNN Turk TV channel.

Cavusoglu said the OSCE Minsk Group has recently intensified its efforts to resolve the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

“Turkey has always stood for peace and stability in the South Caucasus,” noted the minister.

He added that Turkey earlier tried to normalize relations with Armenia.

Cavusoglu said also that Turkey can normalize relations with Armenia under conditions accepted by Azerbaijan.

The foreign minister noted that Turkey also supports all efforts of Russia on the settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts. The 1994 ceasefire agreement was followed by peace negotiations.

Armenia has not yet implemented four UN Security Council resolutions on withdrawal of its armed forces from the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding districts.
