Saudi Arabia to sight Eid crescent on Monday

The Saudi Supreme Court has called on all Muslims throughout the Kingdom to look for the crescent of the Islamic month of Shawwal on Monday evening to determine the beginning of the Eid al-Fitr holiday.

In an announcement carried by the Saudi Press Agency, the Supreme Court called on “whoever sights the crescent to report to the nearest court and register his testimony or report to the authority of the region’s center in his area.”

Eid al-Fitr starts when the new moon is spotted in the sky, making the Eid holiday different around the world. The celebrations begin when the fasting month of Ramadan ends and the following month of Shawwal begins.

During Ramadan, Muslims abstain from food, drinks and sexual intercourse from dawn to dusk, which is an exercise in self-restraint, intended to bring the faithful closer to God.
