Four men have been accused of attempting to smuggle two million banned pills from the UAE into Saudi Arabia.

The group were caught at the Al Ghuwaifat border crossing in May of this year.

The Criminal Court in Al Dhafra heard that one of the men, an Arab national and the main defendant in the case, was driving the SUV when it was pulled over by police.

“On reaching the border, the man’s vehicle was subjected to a security search, during which 2,000,126 narcotic pills were found,” a prosecutor said.

The vehicle had undergone modifications to allow packages to be hidden in the interior and inside the seats.

The defendant then took the police to his house, where they found his three accomplices.

A further 107 pills were in the house, and 210,000 American dollars were also confiscated.

Police said the men admitted the drugs were to be re-exported from Saudi Arabia to other Gulf states.

But in court they denied admitting that and denied the charges.

One of the suspects even said he was innocent and implicated his son, who lives outside the UAE.

The trial was adjourned until September 25.
