The bodies of two Syrian girls have been found in the Mediterranean off the coast of Italy following the capsizing of their boat, the Italian Red Cross announced on Friday. One of the girls was just 8 months old and the other was 5.
They were found among the bodies of six other refugees who drowned when their boat capsized about 22 miles offshore. According to the Red Cross, the boat set off from Libya with 29 people on board, 21 of whom were rescued.
The European Border and Coast Guard Agency announced last week that the number of migrants arriving in Italy has risen since last year. The agency estimates the number who arrived last month at 25,300.
