The Israeli army on Friday attacked a military outpost in Syria after a mortar shell fired from inside Syrian territory landed inside the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, according to the Israeli army.
“The army targeted a Syrian military post from which a shell was fired into the buffer zone [separating the Syrian Golan Heights from the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights],” the army said in a statement.
The statement went on to explain that the artillery shell had not been intentionally fired at Israel but had been the result of “internal fighting inside Syria”.
“The [Israeli] army is not involved in the internal fighting in Syria,” the statement read.
“But it will continue to comply with the 1974 Separation of Forces Agreement, which allows for the maintenance of the buffer zone,” it added.
