Qatar’s former ruler Sheikh Khalifa bin Hamad dies at the age of 84

Sheikh Khalifa bin Hamad Al Thani, the former ruler of Qatar, has died aged 84, the Qatari Emiri Court announced on Sunday.

His grandson and the current emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, has ordered a three-day mourning period, the court said in a statement carried by the state-run Qatar News Agency.

Qatari state television said Sheikh Khalifa, who ruled from 1972 to 1995, died on Sunday evening.

He was deposed in 1995 by his son Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani in a bloodless coup.

Sheikh Hamad handed power to Sheikh Tamim in 2013 to try to ensure a smooth succession.
